How do I get around?

Taxi cabs in Cozumel are affordable and run regularly. Rental cars are also available at the airport, San Miguel and many Hotels. A 45 minute ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen runs 8-10 times daily.

Rental Cars

Renting a car in Cozumel is easy and convenient. Rental cars are available throughout the area at the airport, San Miguel, and many Hotels also offer rental car options. If you decide to drive around town, you'll need to keep your eyes open for pedestrians, mopeds, taxis and bicycles. Most of the signs are in Spanish, but you will be able to recognize most of the symbols on them. Taxis If you want to just sit back and enjoy the sights, then taking a taxi could be for you. Taxis are plentiful, making this a convenient option. Taxis in Cozumel are not metered, so you will want to negotiate a rate for your ride before you let the driver take you anywhere. Other Options For the more adventurous, you can rent a moped or bicycle. This is a great way to really see and experience Cozumel. If you have the time and are experienced at riding a moped or bicycle, this can provide you with a unique experience. Otherwise, you may want to go with a safer mode of transportation, like a car. Ferry Rides If you are interested in visiting the Mayan Sun Coast during your stay, you can take a short ferry ride and experience the mainland.

Currency
The peso is the Mexican form of currency. It is suggested that you exchange small amounts of U.S. dollars for pesos. Major credit cards are also widely accepted. A pocket calculator can also be helpful when you shop to help convert U. S. dollars to pesos. Bartering when shopping outside of the resort areas is practiced. U.S. dollars are accepted in the resort areas but keep in mind any change that is due back will be in pesos. One recommendation is to use a credit card which will present the daily currency exchange on your next billing statement.

Language

Spanish is the official language. English is also widely spoken in the Hotel areas.

Proof of Citizenship

Acceptable forms of proof of citizenship for U.S. citizens traveling between the U.S. and our International Destinations are a valid passport, OR a certified, state issued birth certificate with raised seal AND a valid government photo ID, a naturalization/citizenship certificate, Armed Forces' ID or discharge papers stating place of birth. It is the traveler's responsibility to provide proper documentation. Married women traveling with any documentation in their maiden name must supply a marriage license (a copy is acceptable).
